Joseph "Joe" Tatrn Obituary

Joseph R. "Joe" Tatrn, 90, a lifelong resident of Creighton, East Deer Township, passed away Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital. Joe was born July 22, 1928, in Glassmere, he was the son of the late Charles J. Tatrn Sr. and Sophie Kapus Tatrn. Joe was a graduate of East Deer High School Class of 1946. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Joe's fulltime career was as a glasscutter for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company in Creighton. He was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church and the American Slovak Protective Society in Creighton. He enjoyed playing Euchre at the Creighton Slovak Club, where he was a member of a championship team. He also loved playing cards, animals, fishing, golf and watching Pittsburgh sports teams on TV. However, his biggest talent and passion was his carpentry work, and his greatest joy in life was his family. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Phyllis (Lord) Tatrn; seven children, Darlene (Douglas) Schwab, of Glenshaw, Joseph F. (Jona) Tatrn, of Topeka, Kan., Nancy Pobiak, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Charles S. Tatrn, of Palm Beach, Fla., Terri L. (Mark) Minter, of Lenexa, Kan., Bonnie Sue Heinrichs, of Lower Burrell, and Esther J. (Michael) Augustine, of Creighton; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; and his sister, Betty Lou Perdue, of Wrens, Ga. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diana Tatrn; his brothers, John S. Tatrn, Charles Tatrn Jr. and Anthony "Tony" Tatrn; and his sisters, Margaret Danik, Olga Zietz, Victoria Mistrick and Mary J. Swaiko. In accordance with Joe's wishes, services and his funeral Mass with military honors at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church were private. Entombment followed at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter in Joe's name.
