John P. “Jack” O'Connor, M.D.
Age 87 of Saxonburg, formerly of Spangler and Churchill, PA, died peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. He had an accomplished professional career I Obstetrics/Gynecology and Oncology. Dr. O’Connor delivered thousands of infants over his career. He attained his undergraduate and Master’s degrees from St. Bonaventure University then graduated from Temple University Medical School in 1957. His internship was completed at Johnstown Memorial Hospital. Dr. O’Connor then practiced medicine in the US Air Force as a Captain stationed at the Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico. His residency was completed at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh. He practiced medicine for over 30 years at the former St. Francis Medical Center. Dr. O'Connor was a pioneer in laparoscopic gynecological surgery in Pittsburgh. He also developed a procedure to transfuse twins in utero. Later in his career he provided care for cancer patients. "Jack" met the love of his life, Lois, when she was 16 years of age and enjoyed 63 years of joyful marriage. He is survived by Lois, and their three children, John, Joan and Jane. Growing up, his five grandchildren (John, Emily, Camille, Olivia and Oliver) loved going to the family farm to be showered with love. He touched so many lives over the course of his own. He attained his pilot’s license while in the service and loved flying small aircraft. Jack enjoyed the outdoors where he hunted and fished whenever his busy schedule would allow. He died at St Barnabas Skilled Nursing Home after a short stay where he was cared for by many wonderful providers. On the day he died, one of his kind nurses (Mary Beth) shared that his hands brought her into the world while he practiced medicine. What a wonderful bookend this is to his life story. No Visitation. A Catholic funeral mass will be held at Holy Sepulcher Parish, 1304 East Cruikshank Rd, Butler PA 16002 on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Ronald McDonald House or St. Jude's Hospital for Children.
